Liverpool rival Premier League side in pursuit of Euro goal machine - report

By Will Butcher

Liverpool and Arsenal are set to do battle for Serie A goal machine Leonardo Pavoletti, according to a report.

Pavoletti, 27, is being increasingly renowned in Europe as one of the most prolific goalscorers that has not yet been snapped up by one of Europe’s elite, after scoring 15 goals in 26 league and cup encounters last season.

Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim that Genoa’s number 19 was being watched by scouts as well as Sassuolo’s Gregoire Defrel, by both Liverpool and Arsenal.

The 6ft 2in target man has continued his impressive form into the new campaign, scoring twice in four games for Genoa, as they sit in eighth in Italy’s top tier with a game in hand.

Scouts from both Arsenal and Liverpool were originally in Italy to watch Defrel, but decided to stay longer than planned to watch Pavoletti.

The striker was called up by Italy to face France and Israel last month, and would offer Liverpool an aerial threat in attack that they do not currently possess.

Arsenal could look at Pavoletti as a replacement for Olivier Giroud, as doubts surround the future of the France international.

Pavoletti was once close to joining Championship giants Leeds in January 2015 after being spotted at Elland Road watching the former Champions League side lose to Wigan ahead of a potential loan move.
