Kieran Maguire blasts FSG ‘lunacy’ after Henderson reveal at Liverpool

Jordan Henderson is right to call out the “lunacy” of the over-congested fixture programme perpetuated in part by Liverpool owners FSG.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Liverpool skipper’s recent remarks.

As quoted by Sky Sports on Wednesday (22 December) the 31-year-old claimed: “I am concerned that nobody really takes player welfare seriously.”

His comments came amid a period of anxiety regarding coronavirus figures within the game, as well as a chock-full festive schedule.

Henderson’s Liverpool will play six times in a 23-day period in January.

Maguire pointed the finger at owners within football, who have also given the green light to an expanded Champions League from 2024.

“Adding more and more fixtures will result in more injuries,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“You only have to talk to anyone involved in sports science and they will confirm that.

“Unfortunately, what we have at present is owners who can only see the dollar signs asking how they can squeeze more money out of the game.

“The likes of FSG just see players as commodities because every match is worth millions of pounds.

“We also have administrators who acquiesce through the lunacy of Super League and the revised Champions League.

“That is going to result in more injuries and I think Henderson is right to highlight it.

“Fans are the first to complain when one of their players gets injured. I can’t think of many who want more Champions League group stage games.”

Liverpool’s Boxing Day clash with Leeds United has been postponed because of an outbreak in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

The Reds face Leicester City for the second time in 10 days on 28 December after their League Cup shootout win on Wednesday (22 December).
