Liverpool team news: Klopp gives update on Sturridge and defenders

By North-west correspondent Alex Stevens

Jurgen Klopp has no idea when Daniel Sturridge will make his Liverpool comeback, the manager revealed on Friday.

Sturridge has been ruled out the Merseysiders’ Premier League showdown against Manchester United on Sunday, while Dejan Lovren is not quite ready to return.

Klopp also revealed that Jordan Henderson, Joran Ibe and Mamadou Sakho have showed no ill effects from their midweek comebacks and are in contention for the Anfield clash.

However, the German revealed veteran Kolo Toure is struggling with his recovery. “Kolo is still in the ice bath,” joked the Liverpool manager at his media briefing on Friday.

Klopp’s pessimistic verdict on injury-plagued Sturridge will be a concern for Liverpool supporters.

Asked if the striker was fit, Klopp said, “No”. Asked if he had any idea when Sturridge will be back, Klopp replied, “No”.

The England international has been dogged by an array of ailments over the past 18 months and has missed the Merseysiders’ past nine matches due to a hamstring strain he suffered against Newcastle United on 6 December.

Sturridge claimed shortly after Christmas that he was fully fit after embarking on what Klopp called a “little pre-season” lasting up to 10 days.
