Liverpool tipped to pull off the January statement signing 'Klopp wants' amid 'massive' claim - pundit

Frank McAvennie has backed Liverpool to pull off a “statement” signing in January in a bid to finally replace Gini Wijnaldum.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Reds are missing their formerly “massive” star.

Wijnaldum, 30, left Anfield in the summer after his contract expired and joined PSG.

The Netherlands international was a pivotal player under Jurgen Klopp, making 237 appearances between 2016 and 2021.

Liverpool only signed defender Ibrahima Konate in the summer, leaving a hole in Klopp’s midfield options.

McAvennie claims the Reds will rectify this in the summer with a “statement” signing.

“I think they have to bring in a midfielder,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That is a definite area where they need more bodies. I think talks of a crisis are a bit much.

“Everything has gone wrong because they threw away a two-goal lead to a very good Brighton side, apparently.

“This isn’t a reaction to that, they have needed a midfielder since Wijnaldum left.

“He was a massive player there and they didn’t replace him. In all honesty, they needed a new midfielder even when Wijnaldum was there.

“If they want to win trophies this season, that’s what they need to do in January.

“A big statement signing would go down so well at Anfield. I think Klopp wants that.”

Liverpool are currently 2nd in the Premier League.

They have also already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League after winning their opening four group games.
