Liverpool told to complete ‘£80m’ signing after source’s Josko Gvardiol update – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Liverpool are right to baulk at Josko Gvardiol’s £80million price tag with summer funds better used on midfield arrivals.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old centre-back is a “£50million player”.

Sources told this site on 23 April that RB Leipzig defender Gvardiol is no longer considered a top target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

It is understood that the German side are demanding a financial package close to £80million for the Croatia international – a fee the Reds consider unrealistic.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (25 April) that Liverpool will move for five new arrivals this summer – including up to three central midfielders.

A centre-back and a right-back are also believed to be among the Merseysiders’ transfer priorities in the off-season.

It is likely that Jurgen Klopp‘s side will have to attract targets without the lure of Champions League football following a challenging 2022-23 campaign.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I’ve watched Gvardiol play and I don’t think he’s worth £80million, to be honest.

“That’s a lot.

“If Liverpool look at their options – Van Dijk, Konate, Matip. Is he better than them?

“I think that £80million would be better spent in the midfield areas.

“I understand why Liverpool aren’t going through with it. If I was them, I’d rather buy a top central midfielder for £80million.

“Yes, it’s the going rate nowadays, but I think Gvardiol is a £50million player.”
