Arsenal and Liverpool are on the trail of Athletic Bilbao speedster Inaki Williams

By Will Butcher

Athletic Bilbao are set to enter talks with Inaki Williams over a new deal despite interest from Liverpool, according to a reliable journalist.

Guardian reporter Ed Aarons revealed on his personal Twitter account that Bilbao want to extend the speed machine’s £43million release clause, amid interest from the Reds.

That could see the Merseyside giants miss out on 22-year-old star who already has four years to run on his current deal at the San Memes Stadium.

Known for his electrifying pace, one-time Spain international Williams has been an integral member of the Bilbao side that finished in a respectable seventh place in La Liga this term.

Bilbao’s number 11 has had a hand in 16 goals during his 48 league and cup appearances, as manager Ernesto Valverde placed the homegrown talent on the wing or up front.

Scoring eight goals against the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, Williams also turned provider on a further eight occasions from the left flank.

Now, Liverpool could be tempted to meet the release clause but must work quickly in order to tempt Williams into rejecting a potential new deal with the Spanish outfit.

Football Insider verdict:

We all saw how Liverpool struggled without Sadio Mane. The Senegal international jetted off to the African Cup of Nations in January and was missing for six weeks. It saw Jurgen Klopp’s side go from Premier League title hopefuls to battling and holding on to a place in the top four by the skin of their teeth. Without any serious back-up to the trio of Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Robert Firmino, the Reds must bring in a top-quality winger who can both score and provide goals this summer. Williams fits that category to a tee and he would be worth every penny of a potential £43million transfer.
