Liverpool victims of injustice as Virgil van Dijk footage re-analysed – pundit
Virgil van Dijk’s sending off for Liverpool in their game against Newcastle United was “harsh”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender suggested Alexander Isak would have been able to get a shot away had Van Dijk not made the challenge.
As shown on Sky Sports (28 August), the Reds defender was shown a straight red card in the game against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday (27 August) for a challenge on Alexander Isak.
Despite being a goal down at the time of the incident, Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a late double from Darwin Nunez.
Van Dijk has since been charged by the FA after reportedly behaving in an improper manner following his sending off.
The Reds captain has been accused of using abusive and/or insulting words toward a match official.
When asked if the decision was harsh, Hutton told Football Insider: “A little bit, I must admit.
“People were talking like it was a shocker of a tackle and I do not think it was as bad. Look at it.

“The only reason I think it was a red was because he was through on goal. Isak is fast and if he took a touch out of his foot, he would get a shot off. That is why it was probably a red card.
“I do not think there was much malice in it, I do not think he went through the back of him in a rash way.“
