Newcastle loanee Ivan Toney kept up his good form this season with a brace in Scunthorpe’s 3-1 victory over Chesterfield on Monday.
The 21-year-old has helped Scunthorpe this campaign up to fourth in League One since he joined in the January window.
The forward looks set to be involved in the end of season play-offs and may have caught the attention of Rafael Benitez with his performances out on loan.
Toney spent the first half of the season on loan at League One club Shrewsbury, where he managed seven goals in 26 games across all competitions.
The striker has netted six goals since his move to Scunthorpe, meaning the youngster has a respectable tally of 13 for the season.
He moved to St James’ Park in 2015 from Northampton and has made just four senior appearances so far for Newcastle, including two in the Premier League.
Toney will be hoping that his form this season will give him a chance of breaking into the Magpies first team next year when his parent club could be back in the top flight.
However, Benitez does have a number of talented forward options at his disposal and could even look to add to it if he gets promoted.
Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Daryl Murphy, Ayoze Perez and Yoan Gouffran are the senior players contesting a starting spot this season, and emerging youngster Toney could be in the mix in the near future if he keeps up his goalscoring form.
