Loan watch: Tottenham 20-year-old has nightmare debut
By Harvey Byrne
Anton Walkes departed Tottenham for the MLS in January in a loan move to newly-formed team Atlanta United.
He has previously made the one substitute appearance for Spurs, which came earlier in the season in the EFL Cup against Gillingham.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder flew out to America on a year-long deal in an attempt to find more first-team football.
However, his debut on Monday morning UK time will have been one to forget.
With the MLS season kicking off this weekend, the occasion marked Atlanta’s first professional match which saw them face the established New York Red Bulls.

It was an encounter which could have seen heroes formed, especially when Atlanta led via a Yamil Asad goal in the 25th minute.
Red Bulls equalised in the 76th minute but a point would have been seen as a great result for Atlanta.
Unfortunately, it all went wrong after Walkes came on, in the 81st minute.
After less than a minute of being on the pitch, Walkes’ first touch of the ball saw him score an own goal, handing Red Bulls a 2-1 victory.

In defence of Walkes, he could not have banked on Bradley Wright-Phillips missing the ball and he needed to make an attempt at getting something on the cross.
However, his name will now be remembered in the record books as the player who cost Atlanta from getting anything in their first match and it was certainly a nightmare nine-minute debut for the young prospect.
