‘Lucas Digne approached over Aston Villa exit amid talks update’

Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne is already emerging as the target of interest from elsewhere ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Frenchman made the move to the Midlands back in January 2022 when he joined from Premier League rivals Everton.

Since then, the 31-year-old has been a regular feature for the club, although he has faced competition from Aston Villa summer signing Ian Maatsen for a place in the side this season.

As a result, there appears growing uncertainty around the future of Digne at Villa Park emerging in the lead-up to the end of this season.

Lucas Digne transfer enquiries made

Currently, the left-back’s contract with the club is due to expire in the summer, meaning this could be their last chance to cash in on him.

Other teams are now seemingly looking to take advantage of that, with an update from The Athletic now stating that Digne’s representatives have received enquiries about his availability from elsewhere.

Despite that an exit from Aston Villa this summer is seemingly not guaranteed for the Frenchman as things stand.

The Midlands outfit are apparently holding off on talks over the left-back’s future for now, although those negotiations are expected to take place once the season has ended.

Before that, the priority for Unai Emery‘s side is likely to revolve around securing qualification to the Champions League for the second consecutive season.

Aston Villa may be tempted to sell left-back

Football Insider Verdict

Heading into the summer, Football Insider has been told Aston Villa are at risk of breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules if they miss out on Champions League qualification.

The sale of Digne is one way they can raise funds to avoid those issues, and given his age and contract situation, they are running out of time to do that.

Indeed, with Alex Moreno only on loan at Nottingham Forest until the end of this season, Emery may have the depth he needs behind Maatsen at left-back to be able to let Digne go.

Should he struggle to clearly establish himself as first-choice ahead of Maatsen on the left of defence, that could be an appealing move for the Frenchman as well.

His experience and ability ought to still earn him a decent move, and he will want to play regularly while he still has time in his career to do so.

With that in mind a move away from Aston Villa for Digne in this summer’s transfer window could potentially make sense for all involved.
