Lucas Leiva talks about current situation at Liverpool, comments on future

By Harvey Byrne

Liverpool stalwart Lucas Leiva has revealed that his current situation at the club “is not great” and that he is unsure where his future lies.

The Brazil international has now been at the club for just under 10 years after signing from Gremio in the summer of 2007 for a £5million fee.

He has made 329 appearances for the Merseyside giants during his time at the club, but at the age of 30 he is struggling to find game time in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Lucas has been consistently linked with a move away from Anfield with Serie A giants Inter Milan’s name coming up on occasion.

The midfield enforcer shared that he is confident in his ability still, but he is unsure whether his future will be at Liverpool.

“The situation is not great,” said Lucas to the Telegraph.

“It is not something I want for my future – to not have many games – but at this moment I have to deal with this and try to find a solution when I have the chance.

“I have to be professional, think about the team and see what is going to happen.

“I don’t want this for my career, especially at my age. I’m not close to retiring and have many years ahead of me.

“Of course there are always rumours but today the best place for me to be is Liverpool. I cannot say about tomorrow.”

Lucas has featured in 14 encounters for Liverpool still in all competitions this season with 10 coming in the Premier League.

However, he has mainly been used as a utility man and made a number of appearances out of position as a centre-back.

Klopp’s side are currently blessed in the midfield ranks with Adam Lallana, Georginio Wjnaldum and Emre Can as regulars in the centre of the park.

All three have been key to seeing battle at the top of the Premier League table in second and five points behind league leaders Chelsea.

It is more than likely that Lucas will have to once again watch from the sidelines on Sunday as Liverpool take on fierce rivals Manchester United in their next league match at Old Trafford.

In other Liverpool news, former Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann has commented on who will have the edge in Sunday’s clash.
