Mac Allister, Caicedo react to Sanchez post after he’s dropped for Chelsea final
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has sent a one-word message after missing out on featuring in his side’s Conference League final win.
After qualifying for the Champions League at the weekend, the Blues had the chance to end their season in perfect fashion on Wednesday night (28 May).
They would take that opportunity, with Chelsea beating Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final to become the first team in history to win all three major European trophies.
As is always the case though, there were some senior players who were unable to get on the pitch in that match to have a chance to be part of the crowning moment of the campaign.
Robert Sanchez an unused substitute vs Real Betis
The goalkeeping position has been a major talking point at Stamford Bridge this season, with Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen rotating as first choice at times during the campaign.
It was Sanchez who had ended the season as number one for Enzo Maresca‘s side in the Premier League, despite the fact he has made some high-profile and costly errors in recent months.
That has generated a fair amount of speculation around the Spaniard, with reports stating that Chelsea are looking for a new goalkeeper as they consider selling Sanchez this summer.
In the wake of that, the former Brighton man dropped to the bench for the final, with Jorgensen starting against Betis as he has done throughout much of the Conference League campaign.
Even so, Sanchez was still keen to bask in his side’s triumph after the match, taking to Instagram to post a series of pictures from the celebrations along with a caption that simply read: “Campeones”.
In response, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who previously played with the goalkeeper at Brighton, was among those to show his support by liking the post.
A number of Sanchez’s current Chelsea teammates such as Moises Caicedo, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson would also do the same.
Chelsea have goalkeeper call to make
Football Insider Verdict
It would not be a surprise to see Sanchez departing Stamford Bridge at some point during the summer transfer window.
With Champions League qualification and the Conference League title, Chelsea can consider this to have been a successful campaign on the whole.
However, there is going to be a desire and expectation for them to go even further next season, by at least closing the gap to title winners Liverpool, and lifting even more high-profile silverware.
If they are to do that though, it feels as if they will need to bring in a more reliable goalkeeper than Sanchez, given his mistakes have set them back at times.
Should that be the case, the Spaniard may not want to drop back down the pecking order, meaning he could look for a move elsewhere that allows Chelsea to sign a new number one.
