Celtic striker Leigh Griffths has hit out at the online trolls who upset his family by spreading rumours that he had failed a drug test.
The Hoops ace revealed that he had missed some recent matches with tonsillitis, after ignorant clams online suggested that he had missed the games for more sinister reasons.
“It was madness what I was reading. I had to laugh at the stuff people try to make up” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“But it’s also not nice for my family to see. They all read that nonsense and it’s just disgusting. The people who put this out there, that’s their life.
“I prefer to ignore what they’re saying and concentrate on the real world. These people are sad individuals.
“They don’t see the light of day. They just sit behind computers or mobile phones and try and make up rubbish to disrupt other people’s lives.”
Griffiths’ return to fitness has come at just the right time for the Hoops, with the Scottish Cup Final against Motherwell only a week away.
Football Insider verdict
Unfortunately for Griffiths, this sort of thing seems to happen to a lot of footballers, especially ones that play in Glasgow, where the rivalry is incredibly fierce and it is all about getting one up over your opponents, even if that means making stuff up about them online. It does not look like it is going to end any time soon either, so Griffiths and other players will end up being the subject of more spurious rumours. Griffiths needs to forget about all this stuff and concentrate on what is happening on the pitch, as he could turn out to have a vital role to play for the Hoops in the week ahead. With Odsonne Edouard out injured the Bhoys only have two fit strikers – Griffiths and Moussa Dembele, and there is no doubt that both players will be involved for the Hoops not only in the upcoming clash against Aberdeen but also the Scottish Cup Final.
In other Celtic news, one player is set to leave the Hoops in the summer.
