Man City backed to win race to Rafael Leao after transfer update from Italy – pundit

Kevin Campbell has backed Man City to seal a deal for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the 23-year-old has attributes the other wide players at the Etihad lack.

Leao has been one of the standout players in Serie A over the past few seasons.

According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (4 November), AC Milan are preparing themselves for big-money offers in the region of £105million for their star man in January.

Chelsea and Man City are both said to be in the race to sign the Portugal international.

Leao’s contract at the San Siro runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked by Football Insider if Leao would be a welcome addition to Pep Guardiola’s side, Campbell said: “The thing is, Leao would offer something that the other wingers at Man City do not.

“He will run in behind and stretch the pitch. [Raheem] Sterling and [Leroy] Sane used to do that. They were fabulous players for City and were difficult to deal with. They could come to feet or go in behind. That causes defences all sorts of problems.

“I understand why City are looking at Leao. He is a really good player. He has real pace.

“I could see it happening.”

He has six goals and nine assists to his name in 19 appearances across all competitions.
