Man City have already landed £20m+ profit after transfer agreed – Stefan Borson
Manchester City have already banked more than £20million profit for next season after agreeing an obligation-to-buy clause in Yan Couto’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League champions have a “huge” profit and sustainability (PSR) capacity because of how well they have sold their academy players in recent years.
Man City made just two new additions during the latest transfer window, with Savinho joining from Troyes for £30million and Ilkay Gundogan returning from Barcelona on a free transfer.
But the permanent exits of Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Sergio Gomez and Tommy Doyle saw them rake in well over £100million in transfer fees.
Pep Guardiola’s side also loaned Couto to Dortmund during the summer window, with the deal including an obligation-to-buy clause worth £25.3million for the Brazil international.
Man City will push Yan Couto profits into next season’s accounts
Borson revealed Man City will look to move that deal into next season’s accounts to supplement their player trading for 2024-25.
“They have got huge capacity just because they sell,” Borson told Football Insider.
“If you are regularly selling players, which has generally been academy players, we all know that they are largely profitable transactions.
“What they have also successfully done is moved some of those transactions back into future periods.

“Yan Couto went to Dortmund this summer on loan and the deal will be confirmed at the end of the season with an obligation to buy, so presumably City will move that player into next year’s numbers.
“As we sit here today, they will already know they have got let’s say £20million profit banked for next year to supplement the trading.”
