Man City have sealed ‘fantastic £20m deal’ after blowing rivals away

Man City may have just sealed the best deal of the January transfer window with the signing of Marc Guehi.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who has exclusively told Football Insider that £20million is a “cheap transfer fee” for Guehi.

Man City confirmed the signing of Guehi from Crystal Palace after stepping up their pursuit amid injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.

Crystal Palace had agreed a deal with Liverpool for Guehi last summer, but the transfer fell through on deadline day and Man City have become the beneficiaries.

Crystal Palace ‘held to ransom’ by Man City

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley thinks Crystal Palace will feel they could have received a higher transfer fee for Guehi.

“It’s such a cheap transfer fee in relative terms for a player of that quality, in the transfer market that throws out some wild valuations from time to time,” Plumley said.

“And if you look at the context again of the other deal that was potentially done for him to go to Liverpool just last summer, and now he’s gone for £20m.

“You know, the mid-table Premier League clubs, even the mid-table Premier League clubs that are established clubs and are big football clubs, they’re just getting held to ransom by the biggest clubs. In the Premier League and in the world, and you can’t do anything about it.

So it is really tough, but, Crystal Palace will feel like they probably could have got a bit more for Guehi in hindsight, but for City it is a fantastic deal.”

Bernardo Silva future remains in doubt

Man City could be set to lose captain Bernardo Silva in the summer, as the 31-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Silva has yet to decide whether he wants to commit his future to Man City, having first joined the club in 2017.

The Portugal international has been linked with a move to Benfica, where he came through the academy and started his professional career.
