Man City regular leaves Jamie Carragher in hysterics after Gary Neville claim

Josko Gvardiol was slated by Jamie Carragher after Gary Neville named the Man City defender in his Premier League team of the season so far.

It has been a disastrous defence of the Premier League title for Pep Guardiola’s side so far, who have now won just two of their last 14 games in all competitions.

That means they currently sit sixth in the Premier League table 14 points behind leaders Liverpool at the halfway stage of the season.

Despite that former Man United defender Gary Neville still picked the Man City star as left-back in his team of the season so far on Sky Sports Monday Night Football programme, leaving Carragher stunned.

Reacting to the revelation on the show, the ex-Liverpool man burst out laughing before asking Neville: “How have you picked Gvardiol at left-back? He gives a goal away every game! Have you actually watched Man City?”

After Neville claimed he had watched them “quite a few times”, Carragher responded by adding: “Well obviously not enough! I mean what games have you watched? Are you serious? Are you serious?”

When the ex-Red Devils defender then explained he had selected the Croatian due to his goal threat and the fact he believes he is still the left-back he would choose when building a back four, Carragher replied: “We’re picking on the first half of the season and he has give goals away so why have you picked him.”

As Neville then doubled down on his insistence that he believes Gvardiol has been the best left-back in the league, and questioned Carragher’s suggestion he must not have watched the Man City man, the latter concluded: “Well if you’d watched him you wouldn’t have picked him!”

Josko Gvardiol form for Man City makes Neville selection a bizarre one

Football Insider Opinion

As Carragher himself notes here, the decision by Neville to pick Gvardiol in his team of the season so far feels almost impossible to understand.

Man City have endured one of the most disappointing title defences in years this season and as one of their regular starters, the Croatian has to take significant responsibility for that.

Indeed, there have been a number of times over the course of the campaign where the 22-year-old has been directly responsible for goals his side have conceded with the errors he has made.

Things have not gone well for Josko Gvardiol at Man City this season

That makes it incredibly hard to justify his selection here, based purely on the fact that he has been nowhere near his previous high standards.

Beyond that there are plenty of others who have performed much better than the Man City on the left of defence in the Premier League this season.

Those such as Antonee Robinson at Fulham – whose form has seen him linked with the likes of league leaders Liverpool – have stood out much more in that position, and would make much more sense as selections at this stage.
