Man City tipped to axe Riyad Mahrez v Liverpool after 'unexpected' development - pundit
Phil Foden will replace Riyad Mahrez in the Man City starting XI for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday.
That is the view of former Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “absolutely incredible” 21-year-old.
Foden was a second-half substitute in City’s 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola went with the more experienced duo of Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling on the wings against the La Liga champions.
City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad before the second leg next Wednesday.
Robinson claimed Foden would have “expected” to start against Atletico Madrid.

“I was surprised Guardiola left Phil Foden out the other night,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“He knew Simeone would sit back and defend. I thought his creativity would lend itself to that kind of game.
“It will be an interesting game on Sunday. It is a season-defining game. I cannot see Man City dropping points after the Liverpool game.
“Foden has to come back in and I think it will be for Mahrez. There is not many players who can come off the bench and change a game like Foden did the other night.
“He was absolutely incredible. It was a man against boys. His talent is unreal. He can unlock any door with his vision and passing. He was on another level against Atletico Madrid.
“It would have been a blow for him not to start the game because I’m sure he expected to. He has to play against Liverpool.”
