Kieran Maguire: Man City to exploit the 'new oil' amid £700m reveal

Man City know that data is the “new oil” in their quest to supercharge their turnover.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s use of data in the commercial department.

City are famed for their use of data in their sporting department and their commercial revenues are among the highest in world football.

But, as per a report from industry experts CLV Group relayed by the Daily Mail last Friday (17 June), they could be harnessing data to even greater effect.

It is claimed that the Premier League’s top clubs have missed out on £700million by failing to collect deeper insights into their fanbases.

And Maguire argues that City should embrace modern technology to mine and monetise data.

“There is a viewpoint that data is the new oil,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“If you can mine that data, you can monetise it. Football clubs have to date failed to convert data into significant sums.

“They are all seeking the holy grail with regards to that. Whether than will come through the metaverse or through some sort of online relationship with the club, we will have to wait and see.

“I always take these reports with a degree of healthy scepticism because they are always published by people with a significant degree of self-interest in order to try and persuade clubs to buy into them.”

City’s total £570m income for 2020-21 was the highest in world football.

They begin pre-season ahead of 2022-23 on 21 July.
