Kieran Maguire: Woodward 'shocked' amid behind-the-scenes Man United reveal

Man United chief Ed Woodward is “shocked” by the reputational damage he suffered as a result of the Super League plot.

So says finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the controversial outgoing powerbroker.

The Daily Mail reported on 12 September that the 49-year-old played a key role in the deal that brought Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

It is claimed that the CEO stayed in contact with agent Jorge Mendes over the summer even when it looked as though a deal could not be done.

Woodward announced he would leave United at the end of 2021 shortly after the botched attempt to join the Super League.

His reign in Machester has been characterised by soaring commercial profits but declining on-pitch success.

And Maguire claims that the Ronaldo deal may have been one last hurrah before he leaves for good.

“He would like to go out with enhanced reputation,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“I think Ed Woodward is shocked at the amount of reputational damage he took from the Super League scheme.

“This is certainly one way of counteracting that because we know all about what Ronaldo brings.

“His arrival is significant, and that is both on the pitch and on the balance sheets, of course

“Woodward is not a football man, he’s a financier. I think he saw the value of the Ronaldo deal for the club.”
