Man United may have to pay off star players after journalist’s update – Campbell

Man United may have to pay off some of their senior players this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suspects the Red Devils will struggle to shift some of their fringe players before the window shuts.

On Thursday (4 August), United announced Alex Telles has joined Sevilla on a season-long loan deal.

According to the Daily Mail‘s Alex McCarthy (1 August), Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Laird and Phil Jones are also surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Wan-Bissaka was the only player from that list to be included in the matchday squad that lost to Brighton on Sunday.

When asked by Football Insider if all of the aforementioned players could leave before the window shuts, Campbell said: “I think they can get rid of the majority of those players.

“A few of them will have to be on loan though.

“There is some experienced players in that list who are on very good wages. If Manchester United want them off the books they will have to pay them off, just like Arsenal have.

“They might have to pay players to leave. This is one of the ways to skin a cat.

“What is the point of having a player like that out on loan? They will never play for United again.

“They might be better off paying them to leave. It will be interesting to see who’s still there come 1 September.”
