Man United news: Donny van de Beek to save his career under Erik ten Hag

Kevin Phillips has claimed Donny van de Beek will get a chance to save his Man United career under Erik ten Hag.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed he has “slight reservations” about the 24-year-old after his failures under two separate “top-class” managers.

Van de Beek, currently on loan at Everton, has made just four league starts for Man United since signing in a reported £35.7million deal in 2020.

The Dutch midfielder was an integral part of Ten Hag’s Ajax side which reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

A Man United source told Football Insider (11 April) that the Red Devils are set to trigger Ten Hag’s release clause at Ajax after deciding to make him the new permanent manager.

Phillips revealed his “doubts” about a potential resurgence for Van de Beek despite the reunion.

“I have slight reservations about him,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Two managers have opted not to pick him regularly now. They’ve worked with him day-in, day-out.

“If you’ve got two top-class managers not trusting him, then why would Ten Hag be any different? Their relationship goes a fair way back.

“I think he’ll get another opportunity under Ten Hag, so let’s hope he can take it. But I have my doubts.”

Van de Beek has made five starts for Everton since joining the Toffees on loan in the winter window.

The 24-year-old is contracted at Old Trafford until June 2025.
