Man United news: Expert lambasts 'unacceptable' Bruno Fernandes amid 'embarrassing' claim

Noel Whelan has slammed Bruno Fernandes for attempting to placate the Man United fans with his comments after the 4-0 loss against Brighton on Saturday (7 May).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, slammed the “weak” 27-year-old for his lack of leadership while captaining the Red Devils.

Chants of “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” could be heard after Man United conceded the fourth goal at the Amex Stadium.

Responding to the chants and quoted by Sky Sports post-match, Fernandes “accepted” the fans’ accusations – insisting he didn’t do “enough to be in a Man United shirt” during the loss.

The loss ensures Ralf Rangnick’s side will finish this season with their worst-ever points total in the Premier League era.

Whelan slammed the “shocking” performance but took particular exception to the players’ “weak” comments in the media.

“It’s unacceptable,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Fernandes coming out and agreeing with the fan’s chanting just says it all. They’re all concerned with image rather than going out and putting it right on the pitch.

“He was wearing the armband during the game, but he’s not rallying the troops. There’s no one out there doing that. It’s shocking.

“It just shows how weak the players are. They’d rather come out and try and say what the fans want to hear rather than put in the hard work on the pitch.

“It really was embarrassing to watch against Brighton – but they’ve been like that all season.

“They look lost out on the pitch. Even Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t do anything but laugh at how bad they were.

“Some of the defending – wow, I’ve seen better on a Sunday league pitch.
