Man United news: Stefan Borson reacts to Jim Ratcliffe’s £79m move

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has injected £79million into the club to pay the bills at Old Trafford.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United are losing money at the operating level and need extra cash for the winter months.

Ratcliffe purchased a 27.7 per cent stake in United in February this year after agreeing a £1.25billion deal with the Glazers.

The deal included an agreement that would see the INEOS chief inject £238million into the club and the £79million is the final instalment of those payments.

The latest investment has seen the British billionaire take his stake in the Manchester giants to 28.94 per cent.

United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million for 2023-24, while they made a net loss of £113.2million across the same period.

Ratcliffe investment to pay Man United bills

Borson revealed there won’t currently be much money coming in at Old Trafford following the investment from Ratcliffe.

He told Football Insider: “This is just cash coming into the club that will allow them to pay the bills with working capital.

“It could just as easily be used for the wage bill.

“United are a club that’s losing money at the operating level like almost every club is.

“Therefore, like any other club, the money has to come in from somewhere.

“It’s particularly necessary as you get into these winter months.

“The money is not coming in through many sources because you have had your TV money in the first part, you have had most of your ticket money in terms of season tickets, so the amount of money that’s coming in relative to the PNL is limited during this quarter.

“It’s money that’s coming in to just pay the bills.

“It was always scheduled to have $100million (£79million) before the end of the year as part of the takeover.

“This is just the money that was anticipated to come in, so it’s not really that significant.”
