Man United to make ‘huge’ Harry Maguire contract decision

Harry Maguire’s future has been the subject of ongoing speculation in recent weeks amid suggestions he could leave Man United for free.

The central defender played a key role as Man United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, scoring the winner in the 84th minute to hand Ruben Amorim a second consecutive win.

Amorim has come under intense pressure in recent weeks, with Jamie Carragher questioning Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to back him despite calls for his head.

However, Maguire’s late goal has helped to further ease the pressure on the manager and once again sparked rumours about where his future will lie.

Maguire’s current deal at Old Trafford runs out at the end of the season, which could see him depart after seven years amid interest from Saudi Pro League sides.

Man United could step up Harry Maguire contract talks

Football Insider revealed on 14 October that Man United want Maguire to sign a new deal despite the temptation of potential big-money offers from the Middle East.

Following his increased playing time in recent weeks, and ultimately his crucial involvement against Liverpool, United could now accelerate their efforts to agree terms.

That is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during the club’s most successful period, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Maguire has played his way into a new deal.

Harry Maguire, as far as United are concerned, is a crucial player,” he told Football Insider.

“He sets a standard every time he’s on the pitch, and I know he has his limitations, but who doesn’t?

“His heading ability is so important at the back, because United don’t have other defenders willing to do the dirty work like he does, and it’s a massive threat at the other end.

“If they weren’t already convinced of how important he is, they will be after that display against Liverpool.

“Plus, it’s the stuff he does behind the scenes as well, they’ve got a lot of younger players at the club, especially in defence, and he’s an excellent influence and example for them.

“In terms of his contract situation, I’m expecting them to offer him a new deal and from what I hear, he would be happy to stay if possible.

“It’s something that’s now probably more likely than ever, and it’s hugely important they get it done.”

Brown first told Football Insider in May that Man United plan to offer Maguire a new contract as they are keen to keep him beyond the expiry of his current deal.

Ruben Amorim plans to keep Maguire at Man United

Man United dismissed enquiries about Maguire during the summer transfer window as he remained a key part of the manager’s plans for the season.

Brown previously told Football Insider that Maguire could be tempted to leave Man United and move to Saudi Arabia if he does not play more regular minutes.

However, after his performance against Liverpool, he has once again proved his worth and justified the decisions not to let him go despite the ongoing interest.

Amorim has been slammed for his treatment of Maguire as a result of his inconsistent minutes, raising questions about whether he could leave the club.

However, after returning to the starting XI, there is a growing feeling that he could be set to sign a new deal and will remain an important influence at Old Trafford.
