Man United transfer insanity: ‘Illan Meslier plan from Leeds United bizarre’

Illan Meslier looks like he could be the subject of a major transfer gamble from Man United in the January transfer window.

The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford has come under scrutiny again over the course of the past few weeks.

Andre Onana has made some recent errors, while Altay Bayindir most certainly did not cover himself in glory in the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham on Thursday (19 December).

However, the plan seemingly being formulated by Man United to deal with those issues looks to be a rather strange one.

As per a report from The Sun, the Red Devils are keen to sign a new goalkeeper in order to provide fresh competition for Onana.

Considering some of those recent issues between the posts it does make sense that they might want to bring in a new option for that role although the identity of one target is rather unexpected.

It is suggested that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is one of those Man United are considering as they look for a new goalkeeper, in a move that would seem bizarre.

The Frenchman’s last spell in the Premier League came in the 2022/23 season when he shipped 67 goals in 34 games before being dropped for the final four games of the campaign as his side were relegated.

That does not entirely speak well to his top-flight pedigree, and recent outings in the Championship may not change that either.

On several occasions during the current campaign Meslier has come under fire from Leeds fans for some significant errors that have cost his side in games.

His late error at Sunderland to throw away two points in October led to claims he should be dropped by Daniel Farke [BBC].

It is therefore hard to imagine he would be the safest pair of hands for Man United to turn to when considering the step up he would have to make with a move back to the Premier League.

Extra pressure would be on him given the rivalry between the two clubs and expectation for success at Old Trafford may also increase the risk of errors.

With that in mind, the decision-makers in the red half of Manchester ought to be thinking long and hard before they commit to attempting to agree a deal such as this with Leeds.
