Man United’s Andre Onana reacts to Lisandro Martinez amid fresh injury blow

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set for a spell on the sidelines in the latest blow for manager Ruben Amorim.

Onana suffered a hamstring injury in training at the beginning of the club’s pre-season preparations before they embark on a tour of the USA.

The 29-year-old has been United’s number one since he arrived at the club from Inter Milan in 2023, but his injury means Altay Bayindir will have a chance to stake his claim ahead of the new campaign in pre-season.

Amorim has been linked with a move for Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez as he looks to upgrade his goalkeeping options.

Martinez returns amid Onana absence

Lisandro Martinez has also had his own injury issues and hasn’t played for United since February.

The Argentine was stretchered off against Crystal Palace after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

Martinez though has returned to the club’s Carrington training base for the start of pre-season, as shown by his Instagram picture, which was liked by Onana.

Amorim faces further problems ahead of new campaign

Football Insider Verdict

Amorim already has plenty of transfer dilemmas and this latest development could force the Portuguese to act quickly.

Bayindir did appear 10 times for United last season, but the Turkey international did little to suggest he could oust Onana from the number one spot.

Onana though has made costly errors during his time at Old Trafford which has prompted Amorim to explore the market this summer.

Botafogo’s John Victor is on the shortlist following his Club World Cup displays and as back up in case Chelsea hijack a deal for Emi Martinez.

Onana could depart to Ligue 1 side Monaco, who have shown interest in the Cameroon international, but this injury could jeopardise any deal.

The Red Devils host Arsenal on the opening day of the season in a crunch clash, so Amorim will need to sort out the goalkeeping position before then.

Finances are tight at the club this summer and Amorim needs to sell players before he can buy, but it is currently proving difficult to shift many wantaway stars.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have all put in a request to leave the club this summer.
