Man United’s jaw-dropping ‘£86m’ new payout revealed
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the true cost of the recent managerial blunder at Man United could reach a jaw-dropping “£86million”.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the manager change has also “caused a lot of image problems” for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in his first year at the club.
Man United revealed the cost of paying off Erik ten Hag and his staff and replacing him with Ruben Amorim and his coaches at £21.4million in their latest financial report on 26 November.
Ten Hag was sacked just months after being given a new contract at Old Trafford by Ratcliffe and his United chiefs.
Amorim has won two out of his first four matches in charge but the Red Devils are still in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Ten Hag blunder will be ‘very expensive’ for Man United, says Wyness
Wyness claimed the “knock-on effects” of giving Ten Hag a new deal only to sack him months later will be “very expensive” for Man United.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it will end up costing a lot more than £21.4million for United.
“That will be the price of the contracts. You’ve got to take into account the players Ten Hag has bought that will be sold on for a loss.
“The prize money they’ve lost out on already this season, that’s got to be factored in.
“There are a lot of factors to get to the real number.
“This situation has also caused a lot of image problems for Ratcliffe, and that goes beyond money.

“There are a lot of knock-on effects which will make it very expensive for United.
“I’ve seen one estimate that puts the price of the change at around £86miliion, so let’s consider the full facts going forward.”
