'The word coming from Spurs...' - Manager reveals what he's heard about Bale fitness
Alex McLeish has revealed he has heard Gareth Bale is still showing improvements in terms of his fitness every day at Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League manager has noted the significant improvement on the pitch from the 31-year-old since his “rusty” performance against West Ham.
The Wales international, who came off the bench with 20 minutes to play against Brighton on Sunday, netted his first goal since returning to Spurs to help secure a 2-1 win.
McLeish has admitted that the Real Madrid loanee looked off the pace in his first top-flight appearance of the season but that he has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks.
McLeish told Football Insider: “The word coming from Spurs was that he was getting fitter every day.
“We saw a wee measure of him in the West Ham game where he should have scored, he stepped inside the defender and he put it past the post – rusty, that was, a bit rusty which is understandable.

“His cameo role against Brighton was really good and it’s not often we associate Bale with headers but he is a big lad, he’s six-foot-one, but not only is there speed, there’s great agility – you remember the overhead kicks in the Champions League.
“You put the ball in the box and Bale’s in a bit of space, he can jump alright, and it was a perfectly placed header. You saw how happy he was with it and the Spurs players were all delighted for him.”
Bale has now scored 57 goals in 207 appearances for Tottenham, with 44 of his strikes having come in the Premier League.
In other Tottenham news, Alan Hutton was left raging with what he saw in Sunday’s win over Brighton.
