Manager: We're interested, talks will determine whether Newcastle winger deal goes ahead

By Tom Blackburn

Carlisle manager Keith Curle is hoping they can re-sign Newcastle winger Alex Gilliead for a second loan spell.

The winger was a success at Carlisle last season, and played 41 times for the League Two side, scoring five times and contributing eight assists.

“We posted an interest at this end,” said Curle in the News and Star, “now it’s down to the club to speak to their opposite numbers at Newcastle and find out if there is a potential deal to be had.”

The 20-year-old has been at Newcastle since he was a youngster, and has played for their Under-23 side in Premier League 2, but is yet to appear for the first team.

The closest he got to making his Magpies bow was in the 2014/15 season, when he sat on the bench as Newcastle lost 1-0 to Leicester in the FA Cup.

He has represented England at every age level from Under-16 to Under-20, but is yet to score in 19 appearances.

He appears to be surplus to requirements at Newcastle for the time being, despite their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Rafa Benitez has had a busy summer recruiting players and has added a number of new faces including several Premier League stars who drop down to the Championship to aid Newcastle’s promotion push.

Notable additions Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie joined St James’ Park for a combined £22million to show the club’s intent on an immediate return to the top-flight.
