Manchester City are interested in signing Sporting Kansas City central defender Erik Palmer-Brown during the January transfer window, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the Premier League side have already presented the 20-year-old with a four-year contract as the player is out of contract with the MLS outfit at the end of the season.
The newspaper reports that the American club have offered the youngster a brand new deal to stay with them but he is poised to complete a move to Manchester at the start of the new year before being sent back out on loan.
Palmer-Brown appears to be very highly rated in Europe as Italian giants Juventus reportedly attempted to acquire his services three years ago.
The youngster has already enjoyed success at such a tender after he captained the Under-20 United States national team to the CONCACAF Championship earlier this year.
The American produced some impressive displays in the defensive midfield role and he picked up the award for player of the tournament.
Palmer-Brown also captained his country at the same level during this summer’s World Cup competition in South Korea where the US fell short to eventual finalists Venezuela.
Football Insider verdict
Although they are currently level on points at the top of the Premier League table with bitter rivals Manchester United, City have still shown that they need to improve defensively in order to compete on all fronts. It is encouraging that the club are looking to buy young talent but it is a risky move for Palmer-Brown as recent history has shown that City are not willing to give first-team opportunities to their upcoming players. As mentioned in the report, it’s almost inevitable that the defender will be sent out on loan if he completes a move to the Etihad Stadium in January as he will not be expected to walk into the starting lineup. The centre-back has already shown that he has the potential for great things given his performances on the international stage and hopefully, he’ll be given a fair shout should he join forces with Pep Guardiola’s side later this season.
In other Manchester City transfer news, this summer signing rejected Barcelona to complete a move to the Etihad Stadium.
