Manchester United: Bruno Guimaraes signing could ‘bring the best out of Kobbie Mainoo’

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo can continue to flourish with the addition of Bruno Guimaraes alongside him.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has blasted Ruben Amorim for what could have happened to the 20-year-old.

Mainoo was frozen out under former manager Amorim, but Michael Carrick’s arrival at Old Trafford has reignited his career.

There were fears that the midfielder could leave the club due to a lack of game time, but now he is a major part of Carrick’s plans.

Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Man United from Premier League rivals Newcastle, with a new midfielder a key target for the Red Devils this summer.

Ruben Amorim ‘mistake’ could have cost Man United

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Man United could “be a force next season” if they get decisions right behind the scenes.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the likes of Harry Maguire are “influential” to their success alongside Mainoo.

Kobbie Mainoo’s 2025-26 Premier League stats at Manchester United.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It is about continuity and having some key parts of the squad, particularly an influential character like Harry Maguire.

“I think he is important in the dressing room. Kobe Mainoo is obviously a whole new player compared to when Ruben Amorim had him. He has reinvented himself and is almost on the verge of the England squad again.

“So that’s good. And I think that the United fans are happy to have Mainoo firing. A lot of them believed in him. And it just shows that some of the mistakes that managers could make that cost owners and clubs a lot of money.

“And he could have lost Mainoo for next to nothing. Whereas I think he still has a big role to play. And alongside somebody like a Guimaraes, I think would really bring the best out of him and the experience and knowledge to work together.

“I think that could really work. So United could be a force next season if they get some of these things right.”

Man United targeting Bayern Munich ace

Sources have told Football Insider that Man United are keeping tabs on Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies.

The Red Devils have also registered their interest in Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly as they look to bolster their options in the position, and provide support for Luke Shaw.

Davies has struggled with injuries throughout his career, whilst Bayern Munich may not be wiling to let the 25-year-old depart this summer.
