Marcos Senesi’s next club: Newcastle and two Premier League rivals could strike deal after BBC Sport update

Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton should all be keeping tabs on Marcos Senesi after a new report revealed that he wants to leave Bournemouth at the end of this season.

Senesi joined Bournemouth from Feyenoord in 2019 and was a regular at the heart of their defence in his first two seasons on the south-coast.

He was pushed down the pecking order last term as Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi became Andoni Iraola‘s first-choice centre-backs, yet their departures have seen him prove his quality once more this season.

Senesi was linked with a move to Real Sociedad and Villarreal in the summer, amid a major exodus from the Vitality Stadium, but he did not leave and has started 15 league games up to now.

BBC Sport (17 December) have reported that Senesi has rejected several Cherries contract offers and is expected to leave the club at the end of his deal next summer, and Football Insider have looked at three clubs who could explore a move to sign him soon.

Chelsea

Senesi reportedly has “several major clubs” keeping tabs on his services, and Chelsea should be one of those considering their current centre-back situation.

Enzo Maresca has a wealth of options to choose from at the heart of his defence, yet has been unable to settle on the right partnership amid numerous injury and form issues.

Senesi has been mooted as an option for Chelsea before now, and the fact that he could bring an air of seniority, as well as likely being happy to settle for a smaller wage and less potential game-time at Stamford Bridge, would make him a sensible signing for Maresca’s side.

Newcastle

Eddie Howe needs to be planning an overhaul of his defensive options in the next two transfer windows amid uncertainty around Fabian Schar’s contract situation, while Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles are both the wrong side of 30 years old.

Senesi was a target for Newcastle in 2022 before joining Bournemouth, and while so much has changed behind the scenes at St James’ Park, Steve Nickson is still their head of recruitment and has held the position since 2017.

He is sure to have kept tabs on the Argentine international’s progress over the last few years, and therefore it would not come as a surprise to see the Magpies as one of the clubs after him before his Cherries contract expires.

Everton

Everton are another top-flight side with lofty ambitions who are surely set to focus on changing their rearguard options in the near future.

Jarrad Branthwaite looks set to leave the Merseyside club soon amid interest from the likes of Man United and Liverpool, but his exit would leave them short of quality at the back and in need of numerous new additions next summer.

The Toffees would, therefore, be wise to seal a bargain capture of Senesi, who would almost certainly become a regular starter under David Moyes over the ageing Michael Keane.
