Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has “no reason” to leave Liverpool, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England striker admitted it would be a “massive blow” for the Premier League champions to lose Wijnaldum.
The Athletic‘s Liverpool reporter James Pearce claimed last week the club have been resigned to losing the Dutchman since the summer and the chances of him staying are becoming slimmer every week.
The 30-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the season and he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.
Wijnaldum has established himself as a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s side since his move from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016.
He has featured in every Premier League game this season and Agbonlahor insisted he will be a huge miss for Klopp.
“It’s a massive blow,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“He’s been on the ride with Liverpool since he left Newcastle and he’s been a big part of that team.
“I’m sure Jurgen Klopp would love to have him sign a new contract but maybe he wants to play his football at a different club and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with that.
“I’m sure if the deal can be right for Wijnaldum he’s got no reason to leave one of the best teams in the world.”
Wijnaldum has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the Premier League with the Merseyside club.
He has scored 19 goals and provided 16 assists in 200 games across all competitions for the Reds.
