'Massive' - Exclusive: Hutton drops Villa training ground update after chats with senior stars
Alan Hutton claims that the Aston Villa squad have been working extra hard in training ahead of the League Cup final this weekend.
The former Villa star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, reveals he has spoken to some of his former teammates and got the lowdown on how their preparations are going.
Villa, who defeated Leicester City in the semi-finals, head to Wembley off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Southampton, manager Dean Smith admitting some players had “played their way out of the team”.
Hutton, who left Villa last summer and has only recently hung up his boots, says that the players are working their socks off to be part of Smith’s plans.
“I speak to John McGinn and some of the other boys regularly, you know what it’s like, cup final week, it’s massive, everybody’s on a high,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Everybody wants to impress, obviously after a bad result, you can imagine training being more intense this week, trying to get back into the manager’s plans so you know if you played good, bad or indifferent what you need to do this week.

“I think they’ll all be putting it in, bursting to get in that starting XI. I imagine the manager will know most of it, who’s starting, but there might be one or two he’s questioning.”
The Villans overcame Leicester across two legs thanks to a late goal from Trezeguet at Villa Park, with backup goalkeeper Orjan Nyland also catching the eye with an outstanding performance.
They take on current holders Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, with Pep Guardiola’s men looking to secure a third successive cup win.
In other Aston Villa news, Hutton was stunned to hear what Smith said about his squad.
