‘Massive, I don’t believe it’ – Stefan Borson is stunned by Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal twist

Arsenal are continuing talks with Sporting Lisbon as they look to complete a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres.

The Gunners have made the Sweden international their primary striker target in a bid to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 7 July Arsenal were confident they had a full agreement in place for Gyokeres as they looked to finalise the finishing touches with Sporting.

However, the 27-year-old’s move is yet to be finalised despite progress appearing to have been made between the two clubs.

Widespread reports have revealed Gyokeres’s agent – Hasan Cetinkaya – has agreed to waive his cut of the deal, which is believed to be worth around €6million (£5.2million).

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider it isn’t plausible Cetinkaya would waive such a significant amount of money for his client to move to Arsenal.

Gyokeres, who signed for Sporting from Coventry City for around £20million in July 2023, registered 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances last season.

Viktor Gyokeres’s agent reached agreement to facilitate Arsenal deal

Borson insisted Gyokeres’s agent likely came to an agreement with Sporting about his cut of the deal.

He told Football Insider: “I would take it with a massive pinch of salt.

“I suspect it simply didn’t happen in the way that it’s been described. It’s not plausible that an agent would go ‘Oh yeah, I’ll just waive my €6million’. Obviously, it didn’t happen.

“It may be that he wasn’t entitled to it in the first place or there was some dispute as to what he was entitled to or he said ‘I’m entitled to €10million (£8.7million)’ and the club said ‘No, you’re not, but we’ll give you €4million (£3.5million)’.

“And rather than there being litigation about it, they came to an agreement. But the idea that he would just go ‘Yeah, don’t worry about the €6million you owe me’, people just don’t waive money like that.

“They probably don’t waive €6,000 (£5,200), never mind €6million, so I just don’t believe the story. The exact details around it, I have no idea.

“I have got a strong idea that no agent is waiving €6million.”

Arsenal race Liverpool to sign Rodrygo

In terms of another potential incoming at the Emirates Stadium, recruitment expert Mick Brown told Football Insider Arsenal remain interested in signing Rodrygo this summer.

There is a growing feeling the Brazil international could be allowed to leave Real Madrid as Xabi Alonso looks to head in a new direction.

However, Arsenal are not alone in their pursuit of the winger as Liverpool also want to sign Rodrygo and have been keeping tabs on his situation.
