Matt Doherty and Ben Davies backed for Tottenham starts v Southampton - expert

Matt Doherty and Ben Davies will start for Tottenham in their opening game of the 2022-23 Premier League season.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Spurs face Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (6 August).

Questions over the right wing-back position have persisted all summer with Spurs completing the signing of DJed Spence, 21, from Middlesbrough.

Doherty, 30, and Emerson Royal, 23, have both been linked with moves away from the club but Wenham claims the former Wolves man will be in from the start against the Saints.

“I think it will be Matt Doherty in that right wing-back role,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He started against Roma and I saw Conte talking him up in the press yesterday. So it will be Doherty, then a back three of Romero, Dier and I think Davies is going to play.

“I saw that he has trained all week so I think he will be back in. Hugo Lloris will obviously be in goal and Perisic will come in on the left.

“The midfield two will be Hojbjerg and Bentancur and then that from three of Heung-Min Son, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski.”

Doherty became Antonio Conte’s first-choice right-back in the final weeks of the season before seeing his campaign end early through injury.

Royal then came in as Spurs’ end-of-season form saw them return to the Champions League.
