Matt Doherty to be axed as Tottenham XI v Aston Villa named by expert
Matt Doherty will be axed from the Tottenham starting XI for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Everton.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Doherty, 30, started at left-back for last weekend’s (3 April) 5-1 win against Newcastle.
The natural right-back found himself on the scoresheet and caused problems for a poor Magpies defence all afternoon.
However, Wenham wants to see the returning Sergio Regiuilon or Ryan Sessegnon replace him.
“For me, it’s the same starting XI again,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The only change I would make is I would maybe bring in Reguilon if he was fit.
“I know Doherty is doing well but I think having a natural left-footer in that position will be better than a right-back playing there.
“Apart from that, it would be the same team. There are arguments about Sessegnon coming in, honestly, flip a coin.
“In Conte’s mind it seems like Sessegnon is ahead of Reguilon in the pecking order but what has he actually done?
“He got an assist up at Leeds, he played ok at Man City. Maybe I would start him instead but honestly, like I said, flip a coin, there isn’t much between them at the moment.”
Tottenham are looking to further close the gap to Arsenal after their rivals’ 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday (4 April).
The two sides will face each other on 12 May.
