Matthijs De Ligt ‘can’t think’ at Man United amid ‘crazy’ Ruben Amorim update
Man United defender Matthijs De Ligt was severely reduced on the pitch thanks to Ruben Amorim’s “crazy” management tactics, according to Martin Keown.
The Red Devils were undone by goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, and Georginio Rutter in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton, leaving them languishing in 13th place in the Premier League.
Alongside De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui was also called out for a poor defensive display, for being at fault for two of the goals.
Former Arsenal defender Keown expressed his concerns on talkSPORT, particularly highlighting De Ligt’s issues. He suggested the defender “cannot think for himself” due to the manager’s demotivating public claims.
He said (10:52am): “I think this is crazy management. To be this self [critical] makes them weaker and makes their opponents stronger. Every time they turn up at Old Trafford.
“He’s saying that there’s a nervousness, a negativity. It’s a self destruct button this”.
He continued, “You don’t underline your issues and make it easy for your opponent when you turn up. This is a massive gamble. I’m looking at some of the players. De Ligt yesterday, doesn’t know whether to push up to drop off. He cannot think for himself. Why would you do this in public?”
Man United form continues to falter under Ruben Amorim
Football Insider Verdict
De Ligt was signed by Erik ten Hag for £38.5 million last summer [BBC Sport] has faced challenges since his move to England.
Despite being a regular this season, with 17 starts in 21 appearances, the criticism from Keown is justified given United’s poor form. This latest defeat leaves them with just 26 points, closer to the relegation zone than a Champions League spot.

Amorim’s self-critical comments have also been met with criticism, with some arguing they could negatively affect player morale. His past remarks have raised concerns about potentially upsetting the squad.
The team’s inconsistency is especially glaring, as they’ve shown their potential in key matches, including a victory over bitter rivals City and a determined draw at Anfield earlier in the season.
