McAvennie: Aston Villa are 'testing the water' with reported Turnbull bid
Frank McAvennie claims Aston Villa are just testing the water as they reportedly line up a bid for Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.
The Hoops icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists Turnbull is only at the start of his Parkhead career.
The Scottish Sun have claimed Aston Villa are lining up a £7million swoop for the 21-year-old midfielder.
This came just days after he was named as PFA Scotland’s Young Player of the Year following his debut season at Parkhead.

The midfielder is under contract until 2024 and McAvennie insists Villa’s bid must be to test the water as Turnbull is worth substantially more than £7million.

When asked if Celtic will be looking for a lot more than £7million for Turnbull, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “Oh god, yeah.
“They might by testing the water with that bid. Turnbull is a wonderful player but he’s only a boy.
“He’s only just started his Celtic journey. I really think he’ll be a Celtic mainstay for the next few years.
“He’ll get his European football and that will help him develop. I’ll be very disappointed if they sell him.
“He’s one of the highlights of this season. Not many of the players have a plus next to their name after last season but he does.”
Turnbull picked up nine goals and eight assists during his first season with Celtic.
He also managed to score one goal for the Dons before moving to Parkhead.
