McAvennie backs Aston Villa to sign 'tried and tested' Premier League talent amid '£40m bid' claim
Frank McAvennie has told Aston Villa to sign another tried and tested Premier League player this summer.
The former Villa hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was reacting to the club’s interest in Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe.
On 21st June, Football Insider revealed Villa are readying a second bid for Smith-Rowe after their opening offer was knocked back last week.
Smith-Rowe made 20 appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League last season.
This summer, the Villains have already re-signed Ashley Young after he left Inter Milan as a free agent.
That followed a club-record deal for Norwich attacker Emi Buendia as they saw off interest from Arsenal.

Both players have played in the Premier League before and McAvennie insists Villa must target more seasoned players this summer.
“I think Aston Villa need someone who’s tried and tested,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“If you are spending big money, you need results. There’s no guarantee that someone worth that amount of money will get you the goals.
“The player might be a wonderful talent but if you are going to spend £30 or £40million on a new player, you need tried and tested.
“Spending that kind of money on a young boy who hasn’t really played regular first team football, it’s a gamble.
“Tried and tested should be their next signing.”
Buendia finished his sole Premier League campaign as one of the league’s standout stars as only three men created more chances than him. [Opta]
One of the only players to finish ahead of him was now-teammate Jack Grealish.
