McAvennie backs Rangers to sign Souttar after earning 'money in the bank' with Ibrox fans
Frank McAvennie claims John Souttar would be a successful signing if he joins Rangers in January.
The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Gers need a new central defender.
Football Insider revealed on 16 November that Nottingham Forest are looking to sign Souttar in January but an Ibrox source has updated that Rangers as well as Stoke City are also keeping tabs.
The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and could sign a pre-contract with a club south of the border from January.
The Hearts defender scored Scotland’s opener in their win over Denmark on Monday evening.
He also scored a last-gasp winner in Hearts’ win over Celtic on the opening day of the season.

For this reason, McAvennie claims Souttar has “money in the bank” with Rangers fans and claimed he would be a successful signing at Ibrox.
“I’ve said so many times, Rangers need a new defender,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Van Bronckhorst will want to build his own team. I don’t know how much of that will go on this season.
“Souttar scored a cracking goal for Scotland and he’s played well this season.
“He would do well at Rangers, I’m sure of that. It’s a transfer that makes sense as well.
“He scored against Celtic earlier this season so he already has money in the bank with Rangers fans.
“They [Rangers] definitely need a new centre back and Souttar would do a good job there.”
Giovanni van Bronckhorst was confirmed as Rangers’ new manager on Thursday.
He replaces Steven Gerrard following his move to Aston Villa.
