McAvennie fumes at Aston Villa as source’s Smith update ‘hard to stomach’
Frank McAvennie can’t believe Dean Smith is under pressure at Aston Villa.
The former Villains striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, finds Smith’s situation “hard to stomach”.
As revealed by Football Insider (22nd October), Smith is under “huge” pressure from club chiefs after a disappointing start to the season.
A Villa source told this site that chief executive and owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris believe a top-six spot is achievable after finishing 11th last season.
The Villains are currently 13th in the Premier League.
McAvennie insists Smith has “worked” wonders with his Villa side and can’t understand why he is at short odds to be sacked.
“The bookies have him at short odds to be sacked,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I really don’t get that. It’s a strange one. He’s worked absolute wonders with that squad.
“I didn’t think they would miss John Terry as much as they have. I’m not saying that is the reason for their form.
“But it can’t be a coincidence. Something is wrong at that club if there is a danger of getting sacked.
“He bought some great players in the summer but they have been unlucky with injuries.
“I don’t think they have been able to name their strongest team yet.
“McGinn not being there is a blow and we know about Bailey’s troubles.
“I just find it hard to stomach that Smith is under pressure, it’s not right.”

Villa lost 3-1 to Arsenal last Friday.
The Gunners were dominant though Villa improved and got back into the game through Jacob Ramssey’s fierce effort.
In other news, Aston Villa plan to accept £18m offer for regular starter.
