McAvennie: Sutton was right to silence McCoist over Celtic star

Frank McAvennie loves what Chris Sutton said about new Celtic man Joe Hart while arguing with Ally McCoist.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to Sutton’s assessment of Hart’s impact.

On 3rd August, Celtic announced the signing of Hart on a three-year deal.

Hart has now made five appearances for his new side and has kept four clean sheets.

On BT Sport (20 August) McCoist admitted he didn’t understand the hype surrounding Hart after he “made two saves”.

Sutton replied by saying Celtic haven’t had a goalkeeper capable of making saves for over a year.

McAvennie insists Celtic fans are right to be happy with their new stopper after Vasilis Barkas Scott Bain’s poor Celtic careers.

“I heard what Sutton was saying to McCoist on TV,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That was absolutely brilliant and he’s right. A goalkeeper that makes saves, what a thought.

“It might sound odd to someone who doesn’t support Celtic but our keepers have been rubbish.

“I said it all last season and at the start of this season, we needed an experienced goalkeeper.

“Now we have one in and the defence feel safe again. Hart has been an excellent signing.

“He’s exactly what we needed back there.”

Barkas started as Celtic’s number one but made several errors in his first few games.

Chief among them was failing to collect a free-kick against FC Midtjylland in a vital Champions League qualifier, leading to a goal.
