McAvennie tells baffling Everton fans to 'get over themselves'
Frank McAvennie insists Everton fans will “get over themselves” once Rafael Benitez starts winning games.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, can’t understand Toffees fans’ reactions to the Spaniard’s new role.
Everton confirmed Benitez’s appointment as manager on 30th June after Carlo Ancelotti left the club a month earlier.
Benitez famously managed Liverpool between 2004 and 2010 and is still lauded as an icon at Anfield.
His arrival at Everton came just days after Sky Sports reported a threatening banner, believed to be aimed towards Benitez, was found near his family home.
There were other protests on social media as plenty of Blues fans were left disappointed or even angry with the appointment.

McAvennie claims all of these emotions will subside once Benitez starts winning cames for his new club.
“It’s going to be weird seeing him in Everton blue for a while,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“But everyone will get used to it. It might take the Everton fans a bit longer but they will get used to it.
“Everton fans will get over themselves if he starts winning games. Imagine if they beat Liverpool.
“Imagine if Rafa takes them to Anfield and they win. I’m sure they wouldn’t be bothered about him then.
“He’s one of those guys who’s a winner. He brings players through and gets the best out of them.
“He’s a great manager, end of. Everton fans will soon see that.”
The Toffees finished 10th in the Premier League last season despite setting the pace early on.
Benitez’ first game in charge is a home clash against Southampton on 14th August.
