Illan Meslier’s agent is “testing the water” at Leeds United with his recent comments, according to Frank McAvennie.
The West Ham and Celtic legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant Xavier Fleury, Meslier’s agent, has hinted at his client’s exit because of monetary reasons.
Fleury told the LUFC Fan Zone podcast that “big clubs” could come knocking for Meslier in the summer and claimed a move to Real Madrid in a year’s time would be difficult to turn down.
The France Under-21 international has two-and-a-half years on his contract at Elland Road, having penned a three-year deal upon his permanent arrival last July.
Meslier has made 106 saves in his debut Premier League campaign, and only West Brom’s Sam Johnstone (113) has made more in Europe’s top five league’s this season. (Wyscout)
McAvennie believes there is an ulterior motive behind Fleury’s comments.
“Agents do not surprise me any more,” he told Football Insider.
“The agent will not be getting any money if he stays at Leeds though, so that could be it.
“Meslier will have spoke to his agent and said it was OK for him to say it though I imagine.
“Whenever an agent is involved it is about the money. I think he may be testing the water.”
Speaking to LUFC Fan Zone podcast, Fleury said: “When you are so young, the youngest starting goalkeeper in Europe, for sure, big clubs could be interested, following him.
“Illan is starting at Leeds. He loves the club. Perhaps in one, two seasons, if you have a club like Real Madrid that knock on the door, who knows?”
