McAvennie tips Aston Villa to sign 'gem' Bailey for bargain price after source's update
Frank McAvennie claims Leon Bailey can help Aston Villa push into Europe this season after a major transfer update.
The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the club’s hunt for the attacker.
On Friday, Football Insider revealed Bayer Leverkusen have turned down an opening offer of £30million and a Villa source has updated to explain the club will return with an improved offer.
This site revealed on 21 July Villa were in pole position to sign the Jamaica international ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Bailey, 23, scored 15 goals and contributed 11 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions last season.
McAvennie claims Bailey could have a similar impact to Ross Barkley and help Jack Grealish thrive next season.

“I think he can take the pressure off Grealish,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“We’ve already seen it happen when Barkley came in, he worked well with Grealish.
“A big name like that can come in and help everyone out.
“£30million is not a lot these days, that’s a steal at that, peanuts. He sounds like a gem.
“Villa deserve to be up there and pushing for Europe and Bailey looks like he could help them do that.
“Will he be the big cheese over Grealish? I don’t think so, he’s the boy isn’t he?
“It might be good for Bailey to come in and have Grealish help him, it would be much worse if he had to replace him.”
Barkley joined Aston Villa on loan last season and got off to an incredible start, scoring two goals in his first two games.
However, injury then struck and he was mainly used off the bench after the turn of the year.
