Glasgow pundit adamant on Gerrard potentially joining Newcastle after confirmed Rangers news

Frank McAvennie claims the only Premier League job Steven Gerrard will leave Rangers for is Liverpool.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, expressed his doubts as the Gers boss opened up on being linked with the Newcastle job.

On Friday, Gerrard refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with replacing Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.

Bruce is under massive pressure after the Saudi-backed takeover went through, with many expecting the veteran to lose his job this week.

However, in a statement released today, Newcastle confirmed Bruce will keep his job for this weekend at least.

Glasgow-based McAvennie insists Gerrard will only leave Rangers for his beloved Liverpool, even though the Newcastle job is an enticing one.

“I would be very surprised,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Rangers know Gerrard wants that job. That job is down at Anfield, that’s it.

“That is the only job he will take in the Premier League, I’m sure. To go to Newcastle, it’s attractive, but I don’t see it.

“There are rumours about Klopp leaving in the next few years, it’s set up for Gerrard to move to Anfield.

“It’s great for Stevie to be linked with Newcastle. It shows he’s doing something right.

“Rangers have a top man there. It won’t be the last time he’s linked with a job before he leaves.”

Gerrard has been mooted to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool whenever he decides to leave.

The German’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

In other news, a pundit has claims ‘so many teams’ want to sign one Rangers sensation in January.
