Ally McCoist has given his verdict on Steven Gerrard potentially taking the Rangers managerial position saying that it’s “incredible” and that he’s in favour of the Liverpool legend taking over.
However, he has delivered a word of warning.
With it looking more and more likely that current boss Graeme Murty will not be in the role beyond the end of the season, the ex-Reds midfielder has emerged as the frontrunner for the post after Mark Allen reportedly jetted to Liverpool to meet with the academy coach.
The Rangers legend, who was co-hosting alongside Alan Brazil on the talkSPORT breakfast show broadcast at 6am, admitted he was keen on Gerrard taking over but issued a stark warning: ‘It’s incredible actually, it really is. I’ve got to say it’s incredible.
“I like it, I do like it.”
“But, listen Al (Alan Brazil), it doesn’t matter who gets that job, you can give it anybody, you can give it to Guardiola, Mourinho, Steven Gerrard.
“If they don’t get the money to buy better quality players they’ll continue to finish second behind Celtic.
“That’s the bottom line.”
Football Insider verdict:
It’s clear that McCoist backs Gerrard to take over the position but he is absolutely right – without sufficient spending, the club can’t compete with Celtic – not even the best manager could bring success without funds. However, if the Light Blues are able to bring in a big name like the Liverpool legend then perhaps financially the club are better off than is led to believe. There is no way that Gerrard would take the opportunity if he thought he was not going to be backed by the board.
