Ally McCoist delivers verdict on three Rangers January signings, says one has 'long way to go'

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist thinks Graeme Murty’s signings in the January transfer window have given the Light Blues their “identity back.”

The Gers boss made six signings in the transfer window as he looks to secure second place in the Scottish Premiership and challenge for the Scottish Cup.

McCoist thinks that some of Murty’s signings – such as Greg Docherty, Jamie Muprhy and Jason Cummings – give fans something they can “relate to.”

“I think it is important that your strongest teams are well represented at national level, I think that makes sense,” McCoist said, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“Graeme’s signings have definitely given the club more of an identity back that the supporters can relate to.

“Docherty from Hamilton is a good signing. He has still got a long way to go but he has shown promise. I think Murphy has been an excellent signing, Cummings on loan time will tell. I think the sooner there is a path back for the lads the better.

“Alex (McLeish) will give them a chance, there is no doubt about that, because from what we have seen and heard from Alex he is crying out to give people an opportunity.”

Three of Murty’s January signings were named in McLeish’s first squad for the friendlies with Costa Rica and Hungary with Cummings, Jamie Murphy and Russell Martin all named in the squad, although Martin would later withdraw through injury.

Docherty meanwhile was away with the Under-21 squad and played 53 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Andorra last Friday.

Football Insider verdict:

It’s good to see three Gers players named in McLeish’s initial squad and a host of young Gers in the various age groups. Getting player back into the national side is another small step in the right direction for the Light Blues after the financial meltdown of 2012. While Murphy and Cummings were used sparingly by McLeish against Costa Rica and Hungary, having players getting into the squad consistently should be the next target for the Ibrox giants. With so many youngsters in the youth squads at international level there should be much more to come in future.
